Personal Info |
Full Name: Yagami Light (or... Light Yagami if you're into that "first name first" thing) Aliases: Kira Age: 23 Birthdate: February 28, 1986 General Physicality: A tall, handsome Japanese man, with lightish brown hair and brown eyes. Always dresses well - wears only fitted clothes, doesn't own a pair of jeans, and tends to wear button down or black turtleneck shirts with jackets. Never looks very casual. In very good shape, but rather slim. Has an unusually intense gaze at times, which can be creepy. Occupation: Detective with the NPA, Intelligence and Information Bureau. Likes: Justice, killing, Ryuzaki, philosophy, power. Dislikes: Evildoers, L, Misa. Relatives: Soichiro (Father), Sachiko (Mother), Sayu (Younger Sister) Sexuality: Relatively asexual, and therefore ambiguous. However, he has only ever dated women. Currently turned on by death and power. Religion: Generally atheist, with some Shinto influence over his worldview. Also, starting to think he's a god, himself. |
Relationships |
L: Probably the most significant relationship in Light's life. At the time they met, Light had never known anyone who even remotely approached his intelligence, and L had never encountered someone whose thought patterns and analytical abilities so closely mirrored his own, and so a mutual fascination was born. It is a complicated relationship, made up of mutual intellectual curiosity, affection and respect. In their first months of acquaintance, they used their conversations to study one another, to stave off boredom, and to delve into their similarities and their differences both practically and abstractly. While this has continued, working together on the Kusama Case has resulted in their bonding on a personal level to the point that their friendship often takes some priority over their mutual study. Initially Light found himself resenting L's freedom and international power, though this has waned as they grew closer, and as Light found his own outlet in the Death Note. While Light genuinely likes, respects, and cares for Ryuzaki, he often finds himself disliking L and his methods. He is also aware that there is at least one other layer to the L-Ryuzaki entity that is out of his reach (the core personality known only to Wammy, best called Lawliet), a fact that he finds simultaneously annoying and intriguing. Ryuzaki is Light's sole peer and only true friend, yet neither has ever been entirely honest with the other. Even so, Ryuzaki is probably the person Light feels the most comfortable with, and cares about the most. Ironically, even as Ryuzaki's trust of and confidence in Light has grown, Light has become increasingly deceptive and manipulative, beginning with his discovery of the Death Note. While his initial deceptions were in the interest of self-preservation, for the past few months, Light has devoted himself to remaking the world in his image. As a result, his attitude toward Ryuzaki has become simultaneously more adversarial and more protective, as he strives to preemptively protect himself from L's inevitable suspicion as well as prevent Ryuzaki from becoming too dangerous to keep alive. Light is highly conflicted over this situation, as his substantial (and growing) affection for Ryuzaki makes it difficult to navigate. Ryuk: Perhaps Light's second most important relationship is to "his" shinigami, Ryuk. Though a relatively recent acquaintance, Light obviously spends practically every waking moment with him, and they have developed a rapport of sorts. Light often tells Ryuk his plans and discusses his ideas with him, treating him as a confidante of sorts, although he is not under the illusion that they are allies, or friends. Being an observant man, Light has quickly come to understand much about Ryuk's motivations and how to use them to his advantage. Arguably, it is only with Ryuk that Light is entirely real. Misa: Light's girlfriend and acolyte. He met this movie actress, singer and popular model through the Kusama murder case, and was forced to keep her close both to protect her from Asakawa and to try and uncover the truth behind the murders and any connection there might be between Asakawa and Misa. After he came to understand the true nature of the case, he was forced by circumstances (and the potential wrath of Rem) to remain with her as they worked on closing the case without revealing the existence of the Death Note. Currently, they have formed an alliance to "cleanse" the world via the elimination of criminals. Light pretends to be interested in her in order to keep her happy, which serves the dual purpose of maintaining her usefulness and preventing her shinigami, Rem, from becoming too unhappy with him. Initially he neither liked nor disliked her, though he found her vaguely irritating and frustratingly stupid. However, over time her personality and demands have begun to grate on him, and now he finds himself barely able to tolerate her, though he is forced to by circumstances. One of his greatest sources of frustration with her is her bizarre one-sided conflict with L. Rem: Rem is Misa's shinigami, and she has made it clear that she dislikes Light and would welcome an excuse to kill him. She finds him to be a disgusting human - he finds her to be nosy and overprotective, and dislikes having to maneuver around her in order to attain his goals. However, as shinigami cannot be killed through normal means, he does not know how to free himself from her. Unfortunately for Rem, Misa did tell Light how shinigami can be killed, and while he has thus far been unable to put this into effect, he certainly keeps it in mind, as well as keeps his eye open for potential openings. Soichiro: Light respects his father and tries to follow his edicts both as a son and as a subordinate officer. However, at times he is given to being headstrong and rebellious, and will follow his own will or conscience rather than Soichiro's recommendations. Their most frequent point of conflict is over the level of danger that Light is willing to place himself in; it isn't that Light is reckless with his life, but he is willing to take a calculated risk, and will often tend to believe his superior intelligence makes him a better judge in these matters than his father. It was Soichiro's potential judgment that troubled him the most during his initial uses of the Death Note, but this crumbled rather swiftly in the face of his growing god complex. Sachiko: Again, Light respects his mother, although rather less than he does his father. He is occasionally annoyed by her hovering and her concern over his lovelife. Sayu: The family member he is closest to, although these things are relative and they don't go to movies together or anything. He has a soft spot for her, and will often let her intrude on his life in ways he would never tolerate from others - this especially becomes relevant when she is having trouble with schoolwork, as he is the most obvious place to go for help. Tokyo Police: Light is generally fairly isolated from his colleagues at Tokyo Metropolitan. However, he does have an opinion of Matsuda, who he finds irritating and airheaded. Takada: An ex-girlfriend from college who is now a popular host on television. She is still in love with him; he has never been in love with her, although he respects her intelligence and is willing to use her connections to his advantage. Mikami: A prosecuting attorney that Light encountered just before his first massive public attack as Kira. He and Light seemed to share a number of views, but did not have the time to fully explore them before Kira's attacks hit the news. Kira: Light's alter ego, and his dark side. While Kira is not a literal second identity, he is arguably a symptom of Light's increasingly fragmented personality, and probably a result of his previously repressed sociopathic tendencies coming to the surface. Once fed, Kira has begun slowly taking over Light, driving him to ever more inhumane behaviors and pushing down what emotions the already disaffected young man previously possessed. As Kira grows, Light's narcissism increases, feeding his God complex, and the idealistic young "paladinesque" Light, once a relatively honest manifestation of his personality, becomes increasingly hardened into nothing more than a social mask. |
Notable Trivia |
Primary language is Japanese, however Light is also fluent in English, French, German and probably one or two other languages. Given to going quiet to process information, at which point he'll generally come out of it with some absurdly brilliant observation, plan or thought. It doesn't actually take very long, but he does noticeably drop out of conversations for a few seconds from time to time. That said, is capable of thinking and adjusting extremely quickly to new problems or events and, in fact, is a bit intoxicated by the challenge of difficult situations. This is partially because he is so intelligent that most problems barely require any thought and as such he occasionally feels as though he is sleepwalking through life. For a similar reason, he is quite prone to boredom. Eidetic memory. Was the top student in all of Japan throughout his school career, including college. Is pretty blatantly proud of this fact. Junior High School national tennis champion. He is now somewhat rusty, but does play on weekends (very) occasionally as a form of exercise. Once dated frequently, but is generally disinterested in actual relationships and, despite a befuddlingly wide array of ex-girlfriends, has never been in love and in fact may not be capable of love. His actual motivation for dating is twofold: first, it keeps his parents from bothering him and second (and, in honesty, more important), he recognizes that it is something someone of his age "should" be doing and while he does not get any particular pleasure out of it, his image is important enough to him to make the attempt. On that note, image obsessed. Is not strictly asexual but is not especially interested either. Tends to use/engage in sex only for a purpose - as a teenager and in college it was to alleviate boredom or maintain the appearance of a normal relationship with whomever he happened to be seeing at the time. Now, he has been celibate for some time, but would be willing to use sex to gain an advantage or as a tool (in fact, this may be inevitable considering his relationship with Misa.) In fact, in recent months he has used his long hours at work as an excuse to avoid dating, which has meant exactly that (long periods of celibacy) and he feels rather better for it. Neat freak. Is emotionally disconnected and has some sociopathic tendencies (which probably never would have become a problem if he hadn't found the Death Note). Tends to be cool and collected, and is almost impossible to truly frighten. That said, he is not immune to fits of rage, and is extremely prone to what's best called silent gloating. For whatever reason, L/Ryuzaki is capable of eliciting much stronger emotional reactions from him than anyone else. Can be considered a moral absolutist, having absorbed and imprinted his father's moral code. However, while his father has internalized this code and can be said to truly believe in and live by it, Light's belief in it is both obsessive and shallow, as well as frequently twisted by his personality "problem." Arrogant, vain and prone to megalomania, but attempts to keep this in check via the appearance, at least, of humility. Unerringly polite and deferential to superiors, at least on the surface. Is frequently thinking negative things about people, internally. Always wears the same watch, which was a gift from his father. Once he found the Death Note, he started keeping a scrap of it inside the watch. Overthinks. Everything. Everything. On that note, is prone to overpreparedness and paranoia. Has truly extraordinary social skills, and possesses a powerful natural charisma. However, there is a portion of him (large and growing) that cannot help viewing most of the world with contempt. While he strives to maintain hope for the potential and future of humanity, in truth he often thinks they are hopelessly lost and too beset upon by vice, corruption and stupidity to extricate themselves without an external "helping hand." Enjoys poetry, but rarely has the time to read it. Pretty sexist, honestly. |
